INTERCONTINENTAL – FAIRMONT GOLDEN PRAGUE HOTEL

Prague's Hotel InterContinental, a jewel of 1970s brutalist architecture, has undergone a complete transformation. Lighting studio U1 lighting was involved from the very start of the project, overseeing the design and coordination of all lighting — from guest rooms and public spaces to the exterior. The result is a lighting system of the highest standard, one that combines precise technical execution with deep respect for the building's artistic heritage.

Lighting design at the highest standard

We joined the project in 2020 as lighting designer, responsible for both the lighting design and the technical documentation required for the building's completion certificate. As the project progressed, we became the lead lighting coordinator.

The architectural concept was developed by TAK Architects, with the interior design led by London-based Richmond International. The lighting responds to the function of each individual space while remaining in harmony with the decorative elements crafted by designers from around the world. Every luminaire is dimmable and integrated into a group control system.

Collaboration with Jaroslav Bejvl Jr.

One of the most demanding challenges was resolving the main room lighting while meeting the requirement for a clean, uninterrupted ceiling — no visible fixture. The solution was an indirect lighting concept, which creates a welcoming atmosphere while satisfying the strict uniformity requirements. This was further complicated by the highly reflective Venetian plaster covering the entire ceiling. We also produced detailed workshop documentation for the decorative lamps in the guest rooms, developed in collaboration with Studio Bejvl.

The iconic works of Roubíček and Demartini

A chapter unto itself was the restoration of iconic luminaires and sculptures by some of the most significant Czech artists of the era — René Roubíček, Hugo Demartini, and Stanislav Libenský. In the Grand Ballroom, René Roubíček's crystal chandeliers shine once again. They had suffered considerable damage, and several pieces had to be newly fabricated. The Zlatá Praha restaurant is presided over by Hugo Demartini's chandeliers. The restoration work also encompassed a glass stele by Stanislav Libenský. The entire process was overseen by Jaroslav Bejvl Jr.

I want to implement a similar project.
